Dekret von Milet über die Didymeia-Spiele

ἐπὶ Ἱποκράτευς, μηνὸς Ἀρτεμιτίου.ἔδοξε τῆι βουλῆι καὶ τῶι δήμωι,γνώμη ἐπιστατῶν, ἩρακλεώτηςΔιονυσοδώρου εἶπεν· ἐπειδὴ τοῦ δή̣–μου κατὰ τὰ πάτρια τάς τε πανηγύ–ρεις καὶ τοὺς ἀγῶνας συντελοῦν–τος ἐν Διδύμοις τῶι Ἀπόλλωνι τῶι Δι–δυμεῖ, τῆς τε πόλεως καὶ τῆς χώραςκαθιερωθείσης διὰ τὴν ἐν τῶιδε τῶιτόπωι Λητοῦς καὶ Διὸς μεῖξιν καὶ τὰςτοῦ θεοῦ μαντείας, ἐξ ὧν ἔθνη τε οὐ–κ ὀλίγα καὶ πόλεις καὶ τῶν βασιλέωνοἱ τετευχότες τῶν μεγίστων <διὰ> τῆςπαρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ συμβουλίας τήν τε καθι–έ〚Ε〛ρωσιν καὶ τὴν ἀσυλίαν ἀνηγόρευ–σαν ἀπαράκλητοι αὐτοί, τῶι τε θεῶι καὶτῆι πόλει τὴν ἀξίαν περὶ τούτων ἀπο–νείμαντες χάριν, προσήκει δὲ τῶι δή–μωι πράσσοντι τοῖς ἐξενηνεγμένοιςχρησμοῖς ἀκόλουθα τόν τε ἀγῶνα τιθέ–ναι τῶν Διδυμείων στεφανίτην καὶτοὺς Ἕλληνας εἰς ταῦτα παραλαμβά–νειν, κοινῶν τῶν εὐεργεσιῶν εἰς πάν–τας αὐτοὺς ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγενημέ–νων, v δεδόχθαι τῆι βουλῆι· ἑλέσθαι πρεσ–βευτὰς πρὸς Κώιους φίλους καὶ συμμά–χους ὑπάρχοντας τοῦ δήμου, τοὺς δὲ αἱ–ρεθέντας ἀφικομένους ἀπολογίσασθαιπερὶ τῶν διὰ τοῦ μαντείου γεγονότωντοῖς βασιλεῦσι καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις Ἕλλησικαὶ περὶ τῶν ὑπὸ τοῦ δήμου πεπραγμένωνεἰς αὐτοὺς εὐεργεσιῶν, καὶ παρακαλεῖνκαὶ ἀξιοῦν, θεωροῦντας τὴν προαίρεσινἣν ὁ δῆμος διὰ παντὸς τοῦ χρόνου διατε–λεῖ ποιούμενος τῶν κατὰ τοὺς ἀγῶναςἐνδόξων, καὶ αὐτοὺς ἀκόλουθα πράξαν–τας συναυξῆσαι τάς τε τοῦ θεοῦ τιμὰςκαὶ τὴν τοῦ δήμου περὶ ταῦτα σπουδὴνκαὶ φιλοτιμίαν, ἀποδεξαμένους τὸνἀγῶνα στεφανίτην, καὶ τάξανταςτοῖς νικῶσι τιμὰς ὡς μεγίστας, εἰδότας̣ὅτι ὁ δῆμος εὐχάριστος ὢν πειράσετα[ι]συναντᾶν αὐτοῖς ἀξίως τῆς εἰς̣ τὸθεῖον εὐσεβείας καὶ τῆς πρὸς τὴν πόλι[ν]εὐνοίας. v πρεσβευταὶ v ἁιρέθησαν· vac.Δημοσθένης Ἐργίνου, Σῖμος Ἀριστοφῶ[ντος].

Unter (dem monarchos ) Hippokrates, im Monat Artemitios.Beschluss von Rat und Volk,nach Vorlage der Vorsteher; HerakleotesS.d. Dionysodoros stellte den Antrag: Da dasVolk entsprechend dem Brauch der Väter dieProzessionen und die Spielein Didyma veranstaltet für Apollon vonDidyma, und da die Stadt und das Landgeheiligt sind durch die Vereinigung vonLeto und Zeus an eben diesem Ort und durchdas Orakel des Gottes, wesswegen nichtwenige Stämme und Städte und diejenigen Könige,denen durch die Ratschläge des Gottesdie größten (Erfolge) zuteil wurden, dieHeiligung und die Asylie ohne Aufforderungvon selbst proklamierten und damit dem Gott undder Stadt die hierfür gebührende Anerkennungerwiesen; und da es wohl ansteht demVolk, indem es entsprechend den ergangenenOrakelsprüchen handelt, die Spieleder Didymeia als einen Kranzagon auszurichten unddie Griechen dazu einzuladen,weil die Wohltaten insgesamt für sie alledurch den Gott geschehen sind,so wolle beschließen das Volk: dass manGesandte wählt zu den Koern, die Freundeund Bundesgenossen des Volkes sind; dassdie Gewählten nach ihrer Ankunft Bericht gebenüber das, was durch das Orakelden Königen und den anderen Griechenwiderfahren ist, und über die vom Volk ihnenerwiesenen Wohltaten, und sie ersuchenund bitten, angesichts der Art und Weise,mit der das Volk die ganze Zeit hindurchfortwährend das Ansehen der Spielebehandelt, selbst entsprechend zu handelnund ebenfalls zu mehren die Ehren für den Gottund den diesbezüglichen Eifer des Volkes und seinenEifer, indem sie Spieleals Kranzagone anerkennen und möglichst hoheEhrungen für die Sieger festsetzen – in dem Bewußtsein,dass das Volk dankbar sein und trachten wird,sich ihnen erkenntlich zu zeigen in einer ihrer Frömmigkeitgegenüber der Gottheit und ihrem Wohlwollen gegenüber der Stadtangemessenen Weise. Als Gesandte wurden gewählt:Demosthenes S.d. Erginos, Simos S.d. Aristophon.

Under Hippokrates, month Artemitios,decree of the council and people,proposal of the epistatai, Herakleotesson of Dionysodoros proposed: inasmuch as,as the people by ancestral tradition celebratesthe festival and the contestsin Didyma for ApolloDidymeus, and as the city and territorywere declared sacred because of thejoining of Leto and Zeus in this place and theoracle of the god, as a result of which not a fewnations and cities and those kingswho have obtained the greatest things throughadvice from the god have proclaimed without promptingthe sanctification and inviolability,rendering to the god andthe city the thanks worthy of these things,and inasmuch as it is fitting for the people,acting in accord with the oraclesthat have been issued, to make thecontest of the Didymeia crowned and toinclude the Greeks in these things,as benefactions common to them allhave come about through the god,it is decreed by the council: to elect am-bassadors to the Koans, as they are friends andallies of the people, and those electedare to go and discourseon what has come about through the oracleto the kings and the other Greeksand about the benefactions that the people have madetoward them, and to call uponand ask them, when they see the policyof glory in contests that the peoplehas through all time pursued,to themselves act accordingly andjoin in increasing the honors of the goand the zeal and public spirit of the peopleas to these things by acceptin thecontest as crowned and stipulatingthe highest honors for the victors, knowingthat the people will in gratitude attemptto fall in with them in a manner worthy of theirpiety toward the divine and their good willtoward the city.
